El tio se va de parranda
When Hip-Hop was born, the root of its DNA was embedded in underground movements propelled by individuals, raised from the ground up with blood, sweat and tears. As the Rap scene in the United States enters a transitional phase figuring out its relationship between the streets it was bred in and the commerce its success has provided, the heart of the movement remains alive and thriving within Latin America. If anyone had any doubts, Willie DeVille’s “EL Tio Se Va De Parranda” tour is sure to put those to rest.
a tour that carried energy and momentum, with every element working in his favor.
Accompanied by a hand picked group of artists, DeVille (@williedevilletv) put together a tour that carried energy and momentum, with every element working in his favor. An energetic crowd, hungry artists looking to prove themselves to the world and great music that delivered lyricism at the top of the game.
The last presentation, in Miami’s Tripping Animals Taproom’s (@trippinganimalsbrewing) event space counted with a line-up filled with underground bangers, having DJ Mad Pee (@djmadpee) spin the records for 90 Culture (@90culture), Léléman (@leleman), Chamo Indigo (@chamoindigo), CourageMucci (@couragemucci) and a special debut presentation by Mango/Delay (@mangoydelay) setting up the scene for Willie DeVille to bring us home with special guest and surprise of the night, Lil Supa (@loufresco).

“It was one of the most hip-hop experiences ever.”
By the time we had a chat with DeVille, the rapper had been touring non-stop, answering sixteen interviews in six days and hitting a different city each of those days, it was obvious he had killed it too, the sense of satisfaction came through, hidden within the humility that he represents himself with. Regardless, when the show was over, he gave us one last interview.
(Recorded after the final show of his tour)
Unfaithfools: How was the U.S. tour?
Marico, no sé, ¿qué te digo?
Willie DeVille: It was incredible, mostly because I reconnected, or really connected, with people I’d known for years but had never met face to face. My brother Pablo, man, I’ve known him for ten years and only now I actually met him. I linked up with my brother-in-law, my wife’s cousin, everyone. But beyond that, New York was insane. We went on this surreal little tour, checking out all the murals of fallen rappers around the city. Our tour guide was DJ Castor, also known as El Haces, an artist, graffiti pioneer in Venezuela, and the guy who dropped the first hip-hop mixtape in the country. Bro, what can I tell you? It was one of the most hip-hop experiences ever.
Unfaithfools: What were your goals for the tour, and do you think you achieved them?
Willie DeVille: No tenía expectativas.
Willie DeVille: I didn’t have big expectations. I only have expectations for cities I’ve already been to. When it’s cities I haven’t visited, I have no idea. You get these demographic stats from social media and all that, but with experience I’ve learned that doesn’t actually mean you’ll have a crowd there. So honestly, my goal was just to connect with people and have a good time. This is the last show of the tour, I just want to go home, be with my wife, it’s her birthday, she’s pregnant, I’m going to have a kid. That’s what really matters, hanging out with people I know and love. That’s what matters.
Unfaithfools: What do you think about rap’s future in Venezuela?
Willie DeVille: In Venezuela, like I said before, rap is in good hands. There are new generations coming up, and luckily there are people like us reaching out to help them. I don’t know if it’s the same with subgenres like trap, dembow, drill, or whatever, but what we do is rap. We’re old heads, real orthodox about it, and in that sense everything’s healthy.
Unfaithfools: What new artists should people be paying attention to right now?
Willie DeVille: My favorites right now in Venezuela are Nasty, OnTheRiky, Suey, Esquisea, I love them. In terms of rap, I think everyone knows the next generation is already here, like these cyphers happening in Bogotá led by SEMPI. There’s a rapper I’ve been listening to lately called Trifásico, he’s amazing. And there’s a team doing crazy stuff: Mejin, Faker, and Duarte. They’re creating some wild shit, and I’m working with some of them.
Unfaithfools: What projects are coming up for you as an artist?
Marico, nosotros vamos a producir.
Willie DeVille: My future as an artist… I don’t know. I don’t make guarantees as an artist, but I do as a strategist, producer, or curator. For the rest of the year there’ll be three or four more albums, curated, produced, or executed by me. Next year I think it’ll be around eleven albums. Bro, we’re gonna produce. You decide if you want to consume it or not, I hope you do. Support us, and we’ll keep working in Venezuela. Venezuela supports everyone, bro. vncnzo, the whole Sapegato crew, Willy DeVille, everybody.
Unfaithfools: What did you like most about your tour?
Willie DeVille: La comida. Fui a Dim Sum Go-Go, a Scarr’s, fui a Roberta’s.
Willie DeVille: The food. I went to Michelin-star restaurants in New York. I went to Dim Sum Go-Go, to Scarr’s, to Roberta’s. I went to a bunch of places I’d had my eye on, and I actually got to eat, because people who know, know that what really matters is being with people you love and the food, motherf***er.
Unfaithfools: ¿Qué cosa te hace sentir agradecido hoy?
Unfaithfools: What are you grateful for today?
Willie DeVille: I’m grateful for my family, the dojo, my wife and my son. That’s what matters, what really matters.
Hip-Hop is badass, rappers are cool and Willie DeVille is no exception. But after this event, the biggest quality that shines through when talking to him is just how nice he can be and how much people love to congregate around him. To see him interact with fans he had never met before and will probably never talk to again with interest and kindness was a breath of fresh air and a sight many other artists should learn from.
Rather than trying to stay mysterious or create a barrier between him and every other human, he embraced his fans, and in doing so, hyped them up for what they were about to see, ensuring everyone was excited to dance their asses off.
Willie DeVille brought a little of the Venezuelan culture so many miss in the midst of a crisis, and gave them a place to feel a bit closer to home for a few hours, all while delivering a performance many wish they could rival. We know his trajectory still has a long way to go and you can bet your ass we’ll be there next time he comes through the States to deliver yet another explosive performance.
