Introducing the challenge
Can you make a hit song from scratch in just 3 hours? I certainly can’t but what happens when you pair 2 skilled musicians in a curated creative space and present them with this challenge?
That is the premise of the first Unfaithfools original show “Sessions live from The Hub”. I just watched the first episode and was genuinely hooked by the dynamics of it. The concept is simple: can 2 artists, generally a vocalist and a producer who may or may not know each other or worked together previously, make a hit in 3 hours? The show takes place in The Hub Music Studio at Brickell and is hosted by the staff of the studio who bring in a fun aspect to the show giving comments and insight on the sessions taking place in each episode.
“As a music lover but not a musician myself, I found it really interesting to watch the creative process behind making a song.”
The first episode features Nia Skyfer, a Cuban-American singer/songwriter who was part of Team John Legend in the 22nd season of The Voice (how cool is that?) and has also worked on projects with well stablished musicians like Young Miko, CNCO and Manuel Medrano. On the producing side we have Venezuelan producer Slo Marr who holds an impressive resume of projects, working with the likes of Chino y Nacho, Lasso and Micro TDH. Is also worth noting that he is a founder member of the hub so we will be seeing more of his personality in the upcoming episodes. During their session they showed instant chemistry and got a little too comfortable before realizing time was running out. Did they deliver?
As a music lover but not a musician myself, I found it really interesting to watch the creative process behind making a song. We love a finalized project but what about the making of it? Most people never get a glimpse of it. The 3 hour timer that constantly ticks down during the session makes it even more compelling. Artists usually get a lot more time than that to make a song, so with a time cap the participants have to come up with ideas on the spot and commit or they may not finish the song.
“We love a finalized project but what about the making of it?”
“In a time where AI can make a song in a second, we made a show about the human process of making music.” Those are the words of Emily Payton, one of the creators and Director of Photography for the show and I think it sums up what the show is about: creativity, authenticity, and artistry.
The show will feature 12 artists across 6 episodes that will drop every other Monday starting September 28th through December 7th and I’m already excited to watch what’s next!
